New signs in Milne Park

Five signs have being erected in the park this summer. These signs have been designed by the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority and are made by Folia from Quebec. They are paid for by a grant to our Association by the Friends of the Environment.

They are describing the functions and benefits to the environment of:

1. Wetlands habitat
2. Beach habitat
3. Forest habitat
4. Meadow habitat
5. Naturalization habitats

Oil spill

On June 29th, at 1.00 p.m., a member of our Association, Pia Zelsman observed a very bad oil spill in Milne Creek. She called Lesley Price to her home to witness the spill. The fumes from this spill were so nauseating that one could smell them from the street and were causing Pia and her daughter to have headaches.

Despite talking to 5 different members of the Spills Action Centre, we were unable to get anyone to come to the site. Finally at 4.30 p.m. staff from the Town of Markham arrived. They put 3 booms across the creek. The correct procedure of absorbing the oil was NOT followed by the Town Staff. Mr. & Mrs. Burrows of Bakerdale Road and Lesley witnessed the oil spill flowing over the booms.

Many neighbours on Banfield also observed the spill and the smell. They also tried to call Lesley, being members of the Association.

The Enforcement Officer from the Ministry of the Environment came to the creek one week after the incident. By this time, the spill had travelled down the Rouge River and was probably in Lake Ontario.

Lesley Price and Tupper Wheatley followed up with a visit to Tony Wong, M.P.P. The oil spill was discussed with Tony. Tony asked that we follow up with a letter and to copy all Members of Council. Frank Scarpitti, as Deputy Mayor, responded and advised that he would talk to the staff at the Town. Tony Wong has promised to show our letter to the Minister of the Environment.
